Full steam ahead for locomotive purchase

DCCL Minister Tim Crookall will be taking a proposal to July’s Tynwald which, if approved, will see the purchase of a new locomotive train to join the Railway’s fleet.

The Minister will be seeking £350,000 in addition to the £50,000 already secured.

The money will pay for a second hand diesel loco - a revised figure after the original price tag of £750,000 for a brand new engine was deemed too excessive given the current economic climate.

The purchase would result in estimated savings of £40,000 per year, with 13 years until it pays for itself.

If passed it will mark the first addition to the fleet since 1927.

Minister Crookall told 3FM that this is not just a ‘nice to have’ purchase, but essential in ensuring the continued success of the Isle of Man Railway.
