A Douglas man who went "beyond self defence" after his friend attacked him in a pub has been fined.
29-year-old Glen Cairney got the man in a headlock as they grabbled during the incident at The Cat With No Tail pub last year.
At Douglas Courthouse this week he pleaded guilty to displaying disorderly behaviour on licensed premises on December 11th.
The court heard Cairney and his friend were drinking in the pub when an argument started at around 9.40pm - the two men began tussling and had to be separated by bar staff and other patrons.
Once separated the other man broke free and threw a glass bottle at Cairney leaving him with a cut face.
When police arrived at the pub Cairney refused to make a complaint - after viewing CCTV officers arrested both men.
Cairney's advocate told the court it was an "unprovoked attack" but admitted Cairney should have refrained from fighting back describing it as a "rather unfortunate episode".
Sentencing the unemployed labourer Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said any offence of violence on licensed premises was considered "serious".
She fined him £600 and ordered him to pay £125 in costs - a one month licensing ban was also imposed.
