Feeding of seagulls and pigeons to become prohibited

The issue of seagull problems was addressed in the House of Keys this week with Minister Phil Gawne alluding to a new byelaw that will see the feeding of gulls and pigeons prohibited in public spaces.

Despite a significant decline in seagull numbers since 1988 there were still a recorded 7000 pairs breeding here on the last count just over 10 years ago.

Due to the drop in numbers they're listed as a red-list Bird of Conservation Concern, however the Minister conceded they are considered by many to be a common pest on the Island, due to their great adaptability in finding foods and their potential for aggressive behaviour.

Minister Gawne used his answer to reiterate to the public that population control of seagulls is not prohibited.

He concluded by saying the issue of seagulls is really a matter for local authorities, however his department will be issuing guidelines to help with the matter.
