\'Energy from Waste Facility of the Year\' shortlisted
The Island’s Energy from Waste plant has been shortlisted in the Energy from Waste Facility of the Year category at the Renewable Energy Infrastructure Awards which take place in November.
The Richmond Hill facility is owned by the Isle of Man Department of Infrastructure and managed by SITA Isle of Man who has operated the energy from waste facility on the Isle of Man since the site was commissioned in 2004.
It now processes all of the Island’s residual domestic and commercial waste, producing approximately 7 per cent of the Island's electricity.
Just less than 50% of the energy output from the Energy from Waste plant is deemed as ‘renewable energy’ hence the recognition under the Renewable Infrastructure Awards.
A European Parliament Directive on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources classifies the biodegradable wastes - such as food waste - received by the plant as ‘biomass’ as a renewable fuel.
