The Department of Education, Sport and Culture says it'll be looking for a new chief officer next year.
Graham Kinrade, who currently holds the post, has announced he'll be retiring after almost 40 years in education.
He described leading the Department as "an absolute privilege", and says the decision to retire wasn't an easy one.
The department says an open process to appoint his successor will begin in the New Year.
