Driving ban for man who thought he'd slept alcohol intake off

Going to get petrol the night after a heavy drinking session has cost a Douglas man his driving licence.

Despite sleeping for most of the day 28-year-old Glen Cairney was more than twice the drink drive limit when he was stopped on Peel Road on January 10th.

Police approached him on the forecourt at 11.30pm - he smelt of intoxicants and failed a roadside breath test telling them "I've only just woken up".

At Douglas Courthouse this week his advocate said Cairney had been "naive" to think the alcohol would be out of his system adding "he will pay the penalty".

Magistrates fined him £1,000, disqualified him from driving for three years and instructed him to take a drink driving rehabilitation course.
