An unsuccessful General Election candidate has been banned from the road for five years after being caught drink driving.
63-year-old Nigel Dobson – who was running in Garff – was one and a half times over the limit when he was stopped by police on Groudle Road on September 2nd.
Officers had followed him from The Queen’s pub on Douglas Promenade after noting him driving away at 12.45am.
Dobson was stopped for a routine check but it was noted he smelt of intoxicants – he failed a roadside breath test and was arrested and taken to Police Headquarters.
At Douglas Courthouse today his advocate described his decision to drive as a ‘gross error of judgement’.
Magistrates told the Onchan man he ‘should have known better’ – they also fined him £1,000 and ordered him to retake an extended driving test and drink driving rehabilitation course.
