Six councillors met Infrastructure Minister Michelle Haywood to discuss the plans, and agreed it would improve road safety for the capital's residents.
The council's executive committee has expressed its support, but says arterial routes should remain at the current speed limit.
The council is due to meet next Wednesday, July 9.
