The Domestic Abuse Act 2020 has now officially come into force, giving the police and courts new powers.
The government says the act provides 'better protections for victims from all forms of abuse.'
Under the new legislation, financial or mental abuse, and coercive or controlling behaviour are now also offences, as well as physical abuse.
More information can be found on the government's Domestic Abuse webpage.
