A Freedom of Information request to the department asked how many posts had been installed on Smeale Beach Road and how much they'd cost.
In its response, the department said 674 posts had been put in, at a cost of just under £10 each.
It said the work would solve legal and illegal activity damaging to the site from vehicles driving off the road and getting stuck in sand as they broke through turf.
