Design for replacement Cosy Nook splits opinion

Port Erin Commissioners’ efforts to redevelop the Cosy Nook cafe have split opinion.

The local authority revealed plans to remove the existing building, and replace it with a larger, raised facility, which includes access ramps to the beach.

Artist impressions, which show a large, three-storey white building on the village foreshore, were published online recently.

Some have applauded the commissioners for proposing a modern facility, whilst many are against the scale and design of what’s proposed.

The building is intended to have extended use as an evening restaurant, and be accessible to all.

Plans explain it would be raised due to drainage requirements, and require a raised front wall to the beach to protect it against floods.

Temporary flood barriers, ramps to provide wheelchair access and a shower area for beach users to rinse away sand are also included.

To meet the authority’s environmental approach to its property, the building would be powered by a mix of solar panels, wind turbines and air source heat pumps.

Keeping the existing Cosy Nook building was an option, but members decided this option was too costly considering the investment required to make it fit for purpose.
