Tesco 'talks the talk but is not prepared to walk the walk' when it comes to Manx meat.
That’s according to the Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister who was asked about the steps being taken to ensure UK owned retailers commit to Manx food production.
It comes after Isle of Man Meats decided to suspend its supply to Tesco saying the quantities being ordered didn’t justify the cost.
Phil Gawne says it’s disappointing that more meat isn’t being ordered – especially after Tesco recently committed to doubling the amount of local meat in Northern Ireland in light of the horse meat scandal.
He added that it’s not legal, or appropriate, for his department to make any retailer stock Manx produce and that Tesco itself needs to think again about its commitment to the Island.
