Douglas council says it would cost hundreds of thousands of pounds to go green at the crematorium.
A report to its Regeneration and Community Committee discussed whether the facility could be carbon neutral in future.
But proposals for an electric cremator found it would need a new £200,000 substation on top of the cost of expanding the building.
The local authority has shelved the plans but says it will look at how to reduce emissions.
It'll discuss the proposals at a meeting later.
