Consultation To Close UK Coastguard Stations Could Impact Isle of Man

A currently active consultation into the modernisation of the UK’s Coastguard service could prove to have negative knock ons for the Isle of Man.

The consultation is inviting proposals of how the UK's Maritime & Coastguard Agency could effectively reduce the number of UK Coastguard stations from 18 to 8.

Under the terms of the existing Memorandum of Understanding the Island’s emergencies are co-ordinated with the Liverpool team.

It’s looking likely however that the Liverpool station will be one of those axed, meaning that future incidents could be co-ordinated from Aberdeen.

Currently Liverpool provides Offshore Search and Rescue assistance for the Island, aswell as support in the event of a pollution or shipping incident.

Director of Harbours, Captain Michael Brew has said the Island has enjoyed many years of working with the Liverpool team and says to lose their exceptional local knowledge of the area would not be desirable.
