A consultation has been launched on proposed guidance for pet owners as part of the Animal Welfare Bill.
The bill will boost protection for domestic and kept animals and increase penalties for those found guilty of animal cruelty.
Views are now being sought on draft animal welfare codes surrounding cats, dogs, horses and rabbits.
Dr Michelle Haywood, political member for the Environment, explains what the codes are for:
The consultation will run until November 2, when the feedback will be used to inform the finalised codes that will come into effect when the Animal Welfare Bill receives Royal Assent.
Dr Haywood addded that the department will be launching a separate consultation on the use of e-collars on dogs.
