Onchan Commissioners have been warned leaking confidential information could land them with a fine of up to £1,000.
At the board's last meeting, members voted to adopt a new media policy about speaking to the press.
The new policy says local authority members must consult with the chairman before making statements on behalf of the board.
And members were reminded leaking information was an offence under the Island's Local Government Act.
