Being granted city status would be a "great honour" for Douglas.
That's according Douglas Borough Council as it submits an application to the civic honours competition which will see the Queen give city status on one or more towns next year.
For the first time it's now also open to the Crown Dependancies.
The council hopes city status will elevate the town's profile and help attract new business.
Peel also announced it would apply for city status through the competition.
