Routine smear tests will now be every five years instead of three for women testing negative for the HPV virus.
Government says advances in screening technology means the tests aren't needed as often.
And it adds more effective tests mean the HPV virus behind cervical cancer can be detected before it can develop.
From July 24 to 49 year olds will be invited again after five years for the next routine test.
