Mark Cavendish has been named as one of 12 athletes chosen to represent the Isle of Man in the Commonwealth Games next year.

The world-famous cyclist joins Loughborough University graduate, Laura Kinley, pro-cyclist, Amelia Sharpe, running coach, Ollie Lockley and celebrated Manx swimmer Joel Watterson.

Organisers said the provisional list will be added to in the run up to the Games which are scheduled to be held in Birmingham next year.

The remaining Manx athletes named in the provisional list are Sarah Astin, Anna Christian, Lizzie Holden, Matt Bostock, Sam Brand, Mark Christian and Max Walker.

A total of 30 athletes will make up Team Isle of Man, with the final team to be confirmed in April 2022.

President of the Commonwealth Games Association Basil Bielich said: "We are delighted to have been able to select twelve athletes at this stage.

"This is the first time we have selected Tier 1 athletes and we trust that this will enable the chosen athletes to plan their preparation and training programme with more certainty and confidence.

"Our plans for our participation in Birmingham are well underway, along with planning for our key fundraising activities, such as the Queen’s Baton Relay and CGA dinner, which offer great potential for commercial partners to get involved with Team Isle of Man".
