Castletown commissioners have been given permission to close Market Square to traffic until next year.
The local authority had applied to the Department of Infrastructure to keep the square closed while it works on a permanent closure.
It says it wants to make it easier to hold events such as markets and Christmas celebrations.
The temporary closure will run until March 1.
