Bus drivers to strike from next Thursday

Bus drivers will go on strike for three days starting next Thursday after a vote was passed this afternoon.

The workers’ union Unite confirmed 90 per cent of drivers agreed to industrial action.

It comes after months of ongoing wage disputes with the government which wanted to cut their earnings by up to £3,000 a year.

The cuts form part of the DCCL’s rebalancing strategy, which includes a £300,000 slash to Bus Vannin services.

It’s claimed by the department that some drivers were earning in excess of £45,000 with overtime taken into account.

Government wanted to stop paying drivers for their lunch hours and reduce weekly contractual hours from 42 to 37.

Bobby Morton from Unite told 3FM that unless the government reverses its demands, the strike will go ahead [play audio]:
