The Breastfeeding Bill which was endeavouring to make it an offence to stop mothers breastfeeding in public places has been given a death sentence so says the MHK endorsing it.
Rushen MHK Juan Watterson spoke to 3FM after yesterday’s sitting of Tynwald saw 17 members vote for the issue to go before a committee.
Due to the timings that a committee would entail Mr Watterson said no progress would be made this side of the summer and consequently he doesn't think it will now come into fruition.
Initially when he first put the bill forward he received almost unanimous backing, with this in mind he said he was shocked by yesterday’s outcome.
He said he got behind the bill in the first place because Mothers’ rights were not being safeguarded, and he felt the bill would have changed this.
The consensus from the 17 who voted for a committee was that making it a criminal offence would be a step too far.
