The Office of Fair Trading is advising residents not to employ traders who cold call offering their services.
The OFT says such traders can be persistent, pester homeowners into having unnecessary work done and even in some instances have been known to take victims to the bank to secure payment.
As a result, the organisation is offering advice such as not dealing with those who call at your home without an appointment, not pay significant amounts of money up front and not be pressured into getting unneeded work carried out.
Cold calling is illegal on Island, and officials want the message passed on to friends and neighbours, particularly those who may be vulnerable.
