Around 60 per cent of tax returns are now completed online, according to the Treasury.
A Freedom of Information request asked how many people had submitted tax returns online and how many had been penalised for submitting their forms late.
In its response, the Treasury said almost 33,000 people out of nearly 54,000 returns were completed over the internet.
And it added 5,640 people had been penalised for putting their return in late.
