If a Department of Infrastructure proposal gets backing in this month’s Tynwald taxi’s will be able to operate anywhere in the Island.
The proposal has come about following strong support to the idea in a public consultation held last year, it was first put forward as a recommendation in 2009.
As the moment taxis can only operate in the district they’re licensed too, this can often result in cabs running around the Island empty due to the restrictions in place.
Those inside the taxi trade haven’t been so welcoming of the idea however, with some making their concerns well known.
Minister Phil Gawne has said he has taken their concerns into account and will review the effects in 12 months time, but ultimately said the priority should lie with the public, the customer and the environment.
It will go before Tynwald on the 15th of this month.
