The island's emergency services are providing warnings as part of Boat Fire Safety Week.
It says that blazes on vessels can happen fast and be hard to escape.
Advice includes fitting smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to cabins, keeping a fire extinguisher on board and having an escape plan which everyone knows.
Experts say gas and fuel lines should also be checked regularly by a qualified professional.
