'There's no room for complacency when it comes to racism in football'.

That is the statement from the Isle of Man Football Association (IOMFA) on the publication of its report into racial diversity.

A recent survey showed that more than half of the players who identify as an ethnic minority have experienced or witnessed racism.

The survey, which collected 247 responses, (5.3% of all Isle of Man players) included feedback from players, coaches and referees.

Overall, 92% felt football was a safe and welcoming place, 22% said they had seen or experienced racist abuse while only 57% were confident that the IOMFA would deal with a report of racism effectively.

An association spokesman said stories of racism "ranged from the worst kind of racist verbal abuse to more subtle, inappropriate comments" with some players saying "race had been used to influence refereeing decisions".

About 4,000 people are involved in football through the 26 clubs registered with the IOMFA.

The IOMFA said a series of actions will now be taken to combat racism in the sport including the appointment of an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion lead on the association's board.
