Lessons learned from last winter\'s travel chaos
With memories of last winter's travel disruption still fresh in motorists and public transport users' minds, the Department Of Infrastucture say they are ready and prepared for this winter, as forecasters hint at another severe winter on the way.
Geoff Walmsley, Engineering manager for the DOI told 3FM that preparations have already been made with roadside grit bins made ready, and gritting lorries have been calibrated to ensure the right amount of salt is spread on the island's roads.
In response to criticism last winter, when the Island’s strategic salt supplies were reduced to 50% of its full storage capacity before Christmas, the department has almost doubled its stocks to just under 10,000 tonnes.
