100 years since Island received Gallipoli news

John Goliath was a sailor aboard HMS Goliath - credit Manx National Heritage

100 years ago today the Isle of Man learned the fate of a number of local men who died in the same First World War incident.

On the 13th May 1915 the HMS Goliath was hit by two torpedoes as it provided support for the Gallipoli landings - 570 crewmen lost their lives.
 
Among the dead were over 20 Manx naval reservists who at home plied their trade on the seas. 
 
Matthew Richardson is the curator of history for Manx National Heritage - he says learning the news the following day was a devastating blow for the Island:
