100 years commemoration for WW1 this year

Chief Minister Allan Bell MHK has announced that a National Service of Commemoration for WW1 will be held on Sunday 3 August.

The service will take place at St George’s Church in Douglas – attended by invited guests and the public – to remember the 8,261 men who enlisted.

At that time, official records show that the number was 82.3 per cent of the Isle of Man’s male population of military age.

Of these, 1,165 people gave their lives and 987 were wounded.

Mr Bell says he hopes the world is starting to learn lessons from that bygone era:
