Douglas Council reveals pavement cafe guidelines

Douglas Borough Council has published its temporary pavement cafe guidelines for the town.

The move is aiming to help the hospitality sector as it re-emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic after cafes and restaurants were given permission to open outdoor seating areas at the start of the month.

The council says it's worked closely with the Department for Enterprise, Department of Home Affairs and Department of Infrastructure to arrive at a temporary set of guidelines allowing food and drink outlets to use extra space outside or close to their premises which still allow for social distancing.

The key non-permanent amendments will allow pavement cafés which aren't visible from the premises on condition that they are suitably managed and maintained.

Also, weighted barrier bases around temporary pavement café areas will be allowed whilst furniture not usually designed for outdoor seating is also permitted as long as its suitable and safe.

Finally, application fees will also be waived for premises which will be amending or extending an existing pavement cafe.

All requests to place pavement cafés on the public highway must be referred to the Department of Infrastructure.
