Amy Monroe, Phd Researcher – Is kindness an evolved adaptation, naturally selected to help us compete for access to important social relationships?

The evolution of contagious kindness. Moral elevation is an emotional reaction to seeing other people being kind to other people; it makes us feel 'uplifted' and it motivates us to be kinder to others ourselves. It's been suggested that this emotional tendency may be an evolved adaptation, naturally selected because it helps us to compete for access to important social relationships. Monroe's research aims to test this hypothesis, by looking for evidence of 'special design', which is the hallmark of any biological adaptation.
