The study of the medieval Kingdom of Man and the Isles has been dominated by themes of kings and kingship, warlords, feuds, battles, and high politics, with little consideration given to the place and role of women within the kingdom.
In part, this is due to the nature of our most important primary source for the kingdom, the mid-thirteenth century Chronicles of the Kings of Man and the Isles, which is male dominated and at first glance appears almost completely devoid of a female presence.
In this talk Professor Andrew McDonald will suggest how highlighting the largely neglected topic of the female presence in the Chronicles provides important new insights into the dynamic interactions of gender, power, and historical writing in the medieval Kingdoms of Man and the Isles.
This talk will commence at 6pm - 7.30pm with the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre doors opening at 5.30pm. Tickets £10.
Dr. R. Andrew McDonald (B.A. Trent, M.A. McMaster, Ph.D. Guelph) is an historian of the medieval British Isles, with particular interests in medieval Scotland and the Isle of Man, as well as Late Norse maritime empires of the British Isles.
