National Lottery operator shakes up top team amid slump in sales

Allwyn, the operator of the National Lottery, is launching a further shake-up of its leadership team as it seeks to arrest an alarming decline in sales.

Sky News has learnt that Allwyn announced to staff on Thursday that three of its top executives would leave as part of a restructuring.

The trio are chief technology officer Mark Smith, who will continue as an adviser until next June; Sarah Venning, chief strategy and transformation officer; and Richard Dawkins, managing director, digital.

Under Allwyn's plans, it will create new chief digital officer and chief marketing officer roles in an attempt to revive sales growth after a period in which the Lottery's potential returns to good cause have been cast into doubt.

The National Audit Office, the public spending watchdog, said last month that it would investigate the design of the Lottery licensing process.

A legal challenge by the former media tycoon Richard Desmond - who bid against Allwyn for the ten-year licence - was recently thrown out, but the Lottery's sale performance remains subject to scrutiny.

Recently published figures showed returns to good causes falling to their lowest level for nearly a decade.

Allwyn recently parted company with chief executive Andria Vidler, who has been replaced on an interim basis by Phil Walker.

Justin King, the former Sainsbury's chief who now chairs Allwyn, has taken a more hands-on role in a bid to accelerate the company's turnaround.

Allwyn confirmed the leadership changes in response to an enquiry from Sky News but declined to comment further.
