Murder investigation launched after man, 60, dies following assault

A 60-year-old man has died more than a week after being injured following an assault in northwest London.

Police have now begun a murder investigation.

Michalis Kyriacou was found severely injured in Chippenham Road, Maida Vale, at 2.40am on Thursday 14 May by officers on patrol.

They gave him emergency first aid before he was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service.

Mr Kyriacou died in hospital from his injuries on Friday, eight days later, the Metropolitan Police said.

A 36-year-old man known to the victim, Biniam Tewolde Negash, was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of attempted murder and was charged the same day.

Negash, of Chippenham Road, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court the following day, where he was remanded in custody.

The Crown Prosecution Service has been told that Mr Kyriacou has died.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, of the Met's specialist crime command, said: "Our thoughts are with Michalis' family and friends following this tragic news.

"We also want to reassure the local community that specialist officers are working hard to put together an exact picture of what took place."

The victim's family is being supported by specialist officers, the Met said.
