Southlands' unit set to close due to staff shortages

A unit in the Southlands care facility which looks after elderly and mentally infirm people in the south of the Island is closing due to staff shortages.

The Department of Social Care has confirmed today that it will be temporarily closing the Gansey Unit in Port Erin for at least a month. 

Staff sickness and annual leave are being blamed for the closure with the department saying the number of employees has reached a level where care standards will be compromised. 

Families of the eight affected residents were told of the decision yesterday afternoon. Their relatives will be moved to the EMI unit at Thie Meanagh in Douglas.
