The Island's Education and Children Minister says young people's safety is top priority when making the decision to close schools during bad weather.
Graham Cregeen MHK was responding to a question from Arbory, Castletown and Malew Member Jason Moorhouse in the House of Keys yesterday.
Mr Cregeen says the DEC's adverse weather system connects the department with the Met Office and Bus Vannin to make sure children travelling to or from school will be safe.
He says depending on conditions, a final decision will be made no later than 7.30am on the day.
