The Department of Infrastructure has unveiled a scheme which it says will ‘enhance’ both the appearance and function of both Michael Street.
In its application, the DoI says the main shopping area has ‘reached the end of its useful life’ adding that it is ‘barely adequate’ for pedestrians.
The proposals include the reconstruction of the highway and footways with granite paving, as well as two ‘rain gardens’ in Athol Place.
These green spaces are said to help with drainage during heavy rain and provide habitats for wildlife.
To assist the visually impaired, tactile strips will also be installed to help with navigation.
Coronavirus restrictions has prevented the department from conducting formal consultations with businesses and members of the public.
