Police offer advice after money scam

A detective from the Island’s Financial Crime Unit has urged members of the public to protect themselves against scams after a local woman was conned out of £25,000.

The woman was targeted by conmen who told her she had won a Jamaican lottery but that she needed to first pay taxes to claim her winnings.

Believing the story she regularly paid money into a Money Gram account in Jamaica over a period of three years – but her winnings never materialised. 
 
Police say you should be suspicious if you receive unsolicited e-mails, letters or phone calls saying you have won something.
