Police field criticism after crash results in traffic jam

Motorists need to be better clued up about alternative routes if they find the road they want to use is blocked.

That's the message from police after a crash in Greeba on Wednesday afternoon.

Officers have taken to social media to field criticism levelled at them following the two vehicle crash which saw the main Douglas to Peel Road shut.

Due to ongoing roadworks in Foxdale, and the rush hour period, it meant the Archallagan Road quickly came to a standstill leaving many drivers stuck.

Police say at the scene of a crash their priorities are to 'save life, give first aid and protect the scene' and allocating officers to divert traffic is a secondary priority.

On this occasion they say they didn't have any spare officers to send to Archallagan to sort out the resulting traffic jam - and no time to speak to vehicle drivers as they were being diverted elsewhere.

They're asking people in future to listen to the radio and follow their social media posts for more information but say it's up to motorists themselves to decide on the best alternative route.
