National service to mark WW1 outbreak

A national service of commemoration will take place next month to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

It will take place on Sunday, August 3rd, at St George's Church in Douglas.
 
Prayers and readings by the Island's Bishop, Archdeacon, the Chief Minister and the President of Tynwald will feature.  
 
82 per cent of the eligible population enlisted to the war effort - totalling more than 8,000 men. Over 1,000 were killed and 987 were injured.
