New Proposals Could See Only Certain Subjects Getting Paid For
The Department of Education and Children are drawing up plans which could see a whole new approach to awarding tuition fee grants.
They’re currently waiting to see if the Universities drastically increase their annual fees, with the possibility of some yearly costs trebling.
In this eventuality a restructuring would be needed given the overall tightening of purse strings.
Already they have introduced a measure that means funding will only be given to those students who achieve at least two A-levels at grade C.
Minister Eddie Teare has spoken to 3FM about issues surrounding the ever-increasing number of graduates who annually leave the Island in search of work.
He said in an effort to combat this there is a strong possibility that grants will be awarded to those specifically studying a topic that could benefit the Manx economy down the line.
They are establishing what type of degrees the Manx Government should support.
It is in the early stages of a consultation. Minister Teare says it will be up to the public as it will have wide implications for all students.
A public consultation to follow shortly.
