Kennaugh sets new world record en route to Olympic gold

Onchan’s Peter Kennaugh became only the second Manxman to win an Olympic gold medal after he helped Team GB set a new world record.

Their time of 3min 51.66sec saw them shatter their previous record for a second time this week after first doing so in Thursday’s qualifying.

The team finished comfortably ahead of silver medallists Australia after going into the race as firm favourites.

Kennaugh’s compatriot Mark Cavendish was a commentator for the event and correctly predicted the team would ‘shatter’ their own world record en route to gold.

Peter’s bother, Tim, also correctly told 3FM earlier this week his older sibling would re-write the record books.

Peter is understood to now be taking a well-earned break before returning to training with Team Sky.
