Public sector manual workers will be safe from compulsory redundancy this year but they will also face a pay freeze.
958 Whitley Council workers voted on the issue in a recent ballot.It wasn’t an overwhelming majority though with 504 people for and 419 people against.
There were 35 spoilt papers.
At a meeting of the council yesterday an agreement was signed confirming that in the interests of keeping jobs and helping employers cope with budget cuts,wages will stay as they are but job safety is guaranteed until March 2014.
