The Department of Infrastructure says it only takes minutes to change the matrix signs showing if the Mountain Road is open or closed.
It faced a Freedom of Information request claiming the signs wrongly showed the route as open in practice week, and police told them it could take an hour to update the electronic noticeboards.
In its response, the department said although some updates are quicker than others, its Variable Message Signs take a couple of minutes at most to change.
And it adds during TT, race control decides what messages are displayed.
