Enterprise Minister Tim Johnston says the legality of searching or drug testing shop staff on the Island is exactly the same as in the UK.
He'd faced a Tynwald question for written reply from Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse on the topic.
In his response, Mr Johnston said there's no law against it - and the practices are down to individual company policy.
But he added if someone was unhappy, they could take it up with their employer or the Manx Industrial Relations Service.
