Huge drop in benefit fraud figures

The amount of wrongly-claimed benefits on the Island fell by more than 60 per cent last year, according to the Treasury.

A Freedom of Information request asked for details about allegations and investigations into benefits fraud.

In its response, the Treasury said last year just five people were prosecuted over fraud - down around 75 per cent.

And it added total overpayments last year came to £316,511 - down from almost £826,000 the previous year.
