Group to consider Laxey sewage treatment options

An official group has been set up to look at options for sewage treatment in Laxey.

Manx Utilities has set up a 'Consultative Group' to discuss possiblities around the matter and is made up of stakeholders such as Garff MHK's, representatives of Garff Commissioners, and senior MUA officials.

Plans from MUA to build a new treatment plant at the Cairns Site in the town were considered back in July but rejected by the planning panel which said at the time issues with traffic, smell, noise and an ‘insufficient’ investigation of alternative sites were some of the reasons for refusal.

The main aims of the site were to better protect the environment by stopping the pumping of raw sewage into the sea.

Following the verdict, MUA stated it wouldn't be appealing the decision and that it would work with MHK's, commissioners and the community to find a practical solution.

Meanwhile, Garff Commissioners says following the first meeting of the new group this month, those who attended from the authority are advising that Manx Utilities are keen to have input from organisations in the community who have an interest in discussing the provision of sewage treatment facilities for Laxey and Baldrine.

Those wanting further details on this are asked to get in touch with commissioners at admin@garff.im.
