Government to follow 'Poortown covenant'

That's according to The Celtic League following an agreement between the German Commissioners and government regarding storage of the silt. 

 

A public meeting was held last week in St John's - where the proposal to establish a covenant in agreement of finding a permanent, land-based site was heavily supported. 

 

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture and the Department of Infrastructure has signed the document with commissioners.

 

It was agreed that land near to the quarry would be used for no longer than five years.

 

Dredging will continue with new measures in place, including the installation of fencing around the Poortown site and the establishment of a monitoring committee.  

 

Minister for DEFA Richard Ronan insists that the silt is 'effectively low-risk' and 'naturally-occurring'.
