Girl dies and casualties flown to UK following crash

A 10-year-old girl has died and two other people remain critical in UK hospitals following a road accident in Gansey earlier.

The crash happened at 3.40pm on the Castletown Bypass near to its junction with the Ballkaighen Straight.

It involved a collision between a bus travelling from the Castletown direction towards Port Erin and a silver BMW coming in the opposite direction.

Police believe the occupants of the car were a family travelling together but no one has been formally identified.

Five passengers on the bus and the driver were also rushed to Noble’s Hospital.

Emergency services confirmed the girl’s death shortly after arriving at the scene and another young girl and adult male were rushed to medical centres in the north west of England.

Another passenger travelling in the car is in a stable condition and being treated at Noble’s Hospital.

Emergency protocols were employed at Noble’s to cope with the volume of casualties.

The majority of those injured on the bus were suffering with shock and minor injuries in comparison.

All but one remains in Noble’s with fracture injuries and the remaining five have been released home.

The section of road between Castletown and Port Erin had to be closed for approximately six hours while police examined the scene and made enquiries.

At this time the cause of the incident is unknown and enquiries are ongoing. Police spoke to a number of people at the scene but are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed it.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Headquarters on 631212.
